BURTON 08

As summer comes to a close, you can always tell winter is coming when the new Burton site pops up. The boarding itch begins. Last years Burton site update wasn’t as big an update from previous years as this one seems to be. It still holds a lot the same old Burton style, but seems like their adding in some new progressive flare. Not only that, but their new printed catalog looks epic. Unfortunately I can’t seem to get my hands on an actual physical copy (since I’m saving trees according to them) but the download’able version is still amazing, and makes me want the printed version even more.

Board designs this year as well have some nice stand outs. The Vapor, Custom, Jussi, and Love. On the woman’s side, much less selection than normal it seems, and only one stand out. The Blender. Which might be my all time favorite for this year. Not sure yet, still has to sync in.

They also finally have a really nice video section. Last years was a let down, since the years before was pretty decent. As well the new EST brand style, which relates to its print and video pieces, are real stand outs in post production styling. I can see its overlay colour gradients becoming a decent trend with photography design elements.

Overall I’m really impressed where the Burton team and design teams have taken the brand this year. Making me even more pumped for the snow to start falling and the gear to come out of storage for some intimate use this season.

See you on the hills.

EMIL KOZAK

Emil Kozak’s work, is some stuff I need to get my hands on. He’s recently updated his work section and makes me want some even more. Fully styled surf boards. I don’t ride, nor would I want to ride one of this nicely designed ones. It would just make sweet piece in the living room. There are also sweet t-shirt designs, skateboard designs (wall mount worthy as well) and so much more.

I need some of those cool lamps as well.

VISUAL BLISS

The overall visual of the performance is amazing, lighting, crazy glasses, no fancy dancing, titties. It’s all there. Simple and enjoyable and visually delightful.

The new iTunes ad with coldplay is on the same level.

getting back into it

yup. its been a while, but the new place is all set up and i’ve settled in quite nicely, just need to get a couple plants to add some colour. some curtains might help to. for the past while i have pretty much just been bumming around gathering ideas, but its been tough actually getting back into design. yes i work and design all day, but interface design is quite a bit different than the design work i was doing during school. i’m struggling to get back the mentality i had during school. there are many different factors that have contributed to this sluggish mentality. pretty much my previous living situation really drained me and there was never any real time i could sit down and focus when i had the chance or wanted to. then i was stuck in my parents basement for 2 months in a not so productive environment. then away for the holidays and then spent january moving and weekends away.

getting motivate lately has been really hard. surfing design sites for hours after work has only really put lots of ideas in my head but no passion to sit down for hours and do them. so to help iv decided to read some books iv read before that i got during school. what read textbooks? nop, designer monograph books. i’ve been reading “tell me why” by karlssonwilker, and i’ll read sagmeister’s books after, before i order his new one (things i have learned in my life so far) when its available sometime in march when the order i just placed arrives next week :P.

one thing that i think is effecting me is the environment that my studio station is set up in. i think it needs a little more life to it and personality. the new teknision space is very energetic and bright and open, where my station at home is somewhat tight, constrained in a corner and mixed it with to many other things. i don’t seem to shy away from sitting around on the pc at home which is in the living room and right by the big open windows, and in a much more open space. which makes me think that its a environment setting issue. what solutions do i have. not many. there isn’t much space in the living room for two stations. why not swap them? i have the pc on all day and night doing stuff, where the g5 i put to sleep at night so its nice and quiet sleeping. i had both machines in the same room when i was at the uplands house, out of the bedroom, because we had an extra space for the living room on the main floor. so i’m down one room this time around so iv had to mix things together.

trying to de-clutter the desk and add some personality and brightness to the desk might be my best bet for now. maybe change the orientation of the monitor so that its not a solid wall behind it so it doesn’t seem like i’m in a confined corner. then maybe i’ll spend more than 15 minutes there at at time thinking about doing something, before gallivanting off to the pc or 360 for some entertainment in a more inviting space.

stupid green desk and its corner’ness

advertising: beastialitiy is apperantly in

view it here >

so ran across this off of cpluv. the guys from psyop do awesome work… and this is no exception. though seems advertising (or at least in france) is taking a weird turn these days to try and get our attentions. i guess they have decided that general advertising has become to menotinous for us, or its one of those, get attention by controversy things. now, this ad really isn’t that bad, though definitely, really really really different. though equally entertaining to the max.

enjoy :P

fitc 07

got sent down to “flash in the can” (fitc) by teknision with 3 other people from the company for an all out 4 ish day design and technology conference.. lots of good ass session and fun times… didn’t get out to a lot of the parties but tried. pretty much missed the open bars with blows since i spent a good 24 dollars on rye and cokes at the battle event and didn’t even get a buzz going. ah well. good times… got to hang out with the tek crew, the old algonquin crew, and the current 3rd year algonquin crew. awesome sauce all around.

the finetune wii player was up for an award in the audio category. but apparently the supposed “teknision curse” stooped us from actually picking up the award. out of the 4 people sent but tek, i apparently was the only one who actively worked on the project, thus i was going to have to go up and accepted as well as make an ass of myself as i pull a speech out of my ass… on how awesome i am…

but ya.. good conference to finally go to.. hope i get to go again next year. got to see a lot of the top people in the industry (design, flash, and video) explain their stuff and go though their process and give some good advice on how to be constantly active and re-engineering yourself in the industry. overall i got a lot of good stuff from my time there.

pic swill be on flickr soon… as well as in a mini album on here i hope.. working on that now.

pics are up on flickr here k, there are no tittles tags and comments currently… since aperture crashed while it was uploading.. and i really didn’t feel like re-tagging them again.. for 45 minutes… so il do that online tomorrow at work..

oooo, whuts that in mr dock

pretty impressed so far… they even added fading pallets when you leave photoshop or go to your desktop (some cs3 apps don’t seem to do it though) but by any means, the psd importing into flash is by far the best thing in my eye. i use photoshop for mainly anything flash related. im not a big fireworks person. but ya.. extremely impressed with that.

on another note… the icons.. which i had bitched about a while back when they were released… do look nicer in the dock than i expected… though i still feel the lack in branding design is a downfall and disappointment. they use a lot of bright colours for their application splash screens and look awesome on my 22″ cinema.
